True Story
May 6 - June 4, 2023
Portland Center Stage: Ellyn Bye Studio
by E.M. Lewis
directed by Luan Schooler
A troubled writer, raw with grief from the death of his wife, is hired to ghostwrite the biography of a wealthy man accused of murdering his wife but acquitted on technical grounds. Drawing from the classic noir detective stories about the slipperiness of truth and blurring the lines of good and bad, True Story propulsively examines how facts, biases, and perceptions are manipulated – and asks if discovering the truth is worth the ultimate price?

“This clever theatre noir thriller will have you on the edge of your seat as it follows the twists and turns of a multilayered crime story to the perfect ending that you’ll never see coming.”
“Lewis’s clever plotting brings both mysteries to satisfying conclusion.” “All the actors were exceptionally believable.”
“Lewis spools out her narrative like a game of cat-and-mouse ‘round an M.C. Escher house: The world we’re in is naturalistic, but time frames quickly begin to dance around and overlap one another.”
