True Story

Maria Porter

website

Maria Porter (she/her/they/them) is thrilled to be making her Portland theatre debut with Artists Rep. Maria has enjoyed a lifetime of collaborations with artists from all over the world. As an actor Maria has performed in New York and regionally at such theatres as Milwaukee Rep, Hangar Theatre, Clubbed Thumb, Target Margin, Salt Theatre, Hartford Stage, Virginia Stage Company, and The Kennedy Center. Favorite roles include Ranevskaya in The Cherry Orchard, Skriker in The Skriker, and Maggie in Amy and the Orphans. She was featured as Mary Grim in Hal Hartley’s film, Henry Fool and performed internationally with Teatro delle Radici in Lugano Switzerland as Lady Macbeth in their original production, Shakespeariana.

Maria studied Suzuki with Steve Pearson and with the Suzuki Company of Toga mura, and spent years developing a hybrid acting technique combining Suzuki with other training methods. Her book, Re-Purposing Suzuki: A Hybrid Approach to Actor Training was published by Routledge in 2022. Maria has given work demonstrations and master classes in festivals and conferences around the world. Solo and ensemble creations that use this technique have been featured in regional and international festivals in Edinburgh, Denmark, Cuba, Prague, Peru, England and Switzerland.

Maria holds an M.F.A. in Acting from the University of California, San Diego, is the recipient of the David Newton award for teaching excellence from Long Island University, and a member of Actor’s Equity. mariaporter.org

Our Mission

Artists Repertory Theatre’s mission is to produce intimate, provocative theatre and provide a home for a diverse community of artists and audiences to take creative risks.

Land Acknowledgement

ART acknowledges that our theatre rests on land that was stolen from indigenous communities. It belongs to the Cowlitz, Chinook, Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde, and the Siletz — tribes that remain present, strong and vibrant.

ANTI-RACIST STATEMENT
Artists Repertory Theatre recognizes that we are a predominately white organization and operate within systemic racism and oppression, and that silence and neutrality are actions of complicity. We recognize the critical role the arts play in our culture and national conversation, and accept our responsibility to make positive change through our work, our practices, and our policies. We commit ourselves to the work of becoming an anti-racism and anti-oppression organization, and will work with urgency to end racial inequities in our industry and our culture.
