By Kallan Dana | Directed by Melory Mirashrafi

A daughter and father embark on a shapeshifting road trip across the country. They fill their time doing regular father-daughter things: playing palindromic word games (r-a-c-e-c-a-r), digging up the past, picking up questionable hitchhikers, racing through the gelatinous landscape of their shared nightmares… So fun!
Portland-raised Kallan Dana’s Racecar Racecar Racecar is a tightly crafted, Lynchian thriller that dives into the complexities of memory, family, and the ties that bind — for better or for worse. Everything is great!

No place like home: A road trip through a father and daughter’s nightmares

The expert direction by Melory Mirashrafi is particularly impressive, considering that this thriller has more moving parts than a luxury car, with actors playing multiple roles that feature fast-paced wordplay as one verb slurs into another, such as when Dad says something like, “We don’t server, savor, sever our time together.”

Portland-Raised Playwright Kallan Dana on Her Lynchian Thriller Racecar Racecar Racecar

Billed as a Lynchian thriller, Racecar hops in the car with an unnamed father and daughter on a cross country road trip. As with anything described as Lynchian, something uneasy bubbles under the surface and things get weird. The duo picks up hitchhikers with inscrutable agendas, meets living memories from their past, and Jo March from Little Women makes a cameo. Dana cites Lynch’s masterpiece Mulholland Drive and Charlie Kaufman’s I’m Thinking of Ending Things as major influences on the piece.
