Get the boys together, we’re going on a quest! It’s been a hard year for Eddie, so he revives the old gang (his big brother and two childhood friends) and ropes them into an adventure to find a long-lost variety of apple once grown in their childhood stomping grounds. Amid the blur of chores, kids’ soccer practice, and the relentless daily grind, the guys embark on a quest for a legendary golden apple — only to find something much more valuable.
Mellon Foundation Playwright-in-Residence E.M. Lewis wraps up her 6-year residency at Artists Rep with Apple Hunters!, a funny and heartfelt story of men, friendship, and the power of showing up for each other.

Apple Hunters! is produced as part of the 2026 Fertile Ground Festival of New Works – a program of the Portland Area Theatre Alliance – presenting new work exclusively by local artists in Portland and the surrounding areas. The 2026 Fertile Ground Festival runs April 10th-26th. fertilegroundpdx.org

APPLE HUNTERS! is listed as the “feel-good” show in Artists Repertory Theatre’s season, presumably because “will lighten your heart and restore your faith in humanity” would have been too long. But that’s really what E.M. Lewis’s gorgeous new play does.

I highly recommend APPLE HUNTERS! If you’ve had a heavy heart lately (and who hasn’t), it will help.

Broadway World - Krista Garver

Director Zaina Salame gets the most from her cast. Together they bring Lewis’s play to life. In seventy minutes, the audience experiences a range of feelings, from despair to triumph. As always, the staging is inventive and inviting.

ShoutOut - Sandra de Helen

With quiet brilliance, E.M. Lewis’s heartwarming play about brotherhood, adeptly directed by Zeina Salame at Artists Repertory Theatre, drops breadcrumbs of meaning while also letting us make our own way through the rich woods of her characters’ memories and current-day troubles.

Past and present intertwine in this tactile world, brought to life with Alex Meyer’s evocative scenic design, which includes such artifacts as a rusty pink Schwinn and an old brown refrigerator, combined with withered trees, a falling-down fence, and gravel clustered around the different areas of the set. These pieces are arranged on the deep stage in a way that lets the characters fluidly move through time and space, from Paul’s lonely kitchen table to a log lying in the woods where the boys once roamed.

Oregon Arts Watch - Linda Ferguson

The entire cast is strong and Guerva provides a wonderful center—Noble is deeply likable and Alcalá is appropriately painful to watch. Most often, Matias assumes the script’s extra roles, which fits with his character’s fidgety humor. He signals transitions with changes as small as donning a wig or apron. The actor seems especially gifted at small movements that convey volumes. While playing an older woman, advising the friends on their apple quest, he places a hand on Paul’s arm with a gesture that says: This is hard, and you’re a good son.

Portland Mercury - Suzette Smith
