Classes
ART’s 26/27 season includes three wildly different comedies, each dealing with this almost unbearably complicated world by leaning into surprise, laughter, and disarming theatricality. Our three Pacific Northwest playwrights––Dan Kitrosser, Yussef El Guindi, and Brendan Healy––are innovative and mischievous in shaping their plays, but how do they do it? In this class, we will focus on how playwrights use structure, character, and language to support the themes and ideas explored in their plays. Over three sessions, we’ll look at the many choices made––first by the playwright, then by directors, designers, and actors––that ultimately shape the audience’s experience. These classes, taught by ART artistic staff members, are intended for people who love theatre, and are interested in how a play grows from a hatchling idea into an exciting theatrical event.

Session One (The Text): An exploration of the script. Each student will receive a copy of the play a week ahead of class, along with a set of questions to consider as they read. In class, we’ll discuss the types of choices the playwright is making and how they shape the story. Class held on Wednesday,September 23, 2026 from 6:30pm – 8:00pm
Session two (Tech Observation): Students will attend a tech rehearsal to observe how the technical and design elements come together, and the impact that small details can have on the audience’s experience. Class held on Wednesday, October 21, 2026 from 6:30pm – 8:00pm
Session three (Post-Production Conversation): A guided conversation to discuss the experience of seeing the full production. Class held on Wednesday, November 18, 2026 from 6:30pm – 8:00pm
