At the Apex
At the Apex are productions of brand new plays that speak boldly and imaginatively to the pressing questions of American life today.
We build our main stage season around 1-2 of these vibrant new works every year, engaging and supporting the playwrights as they hone their work. Artists Rep has a long history of premiering fresh, original plays, and through Table|Room|Stage, we are more intentional than ever about this commitment.
Every season we bring new plays to the stage, drawn from At the Table (our commissioning program), and the abundance of extraordinary work by emerging national playwrights. These plays have benefited from developmental support at ART and elsewhere, and are ready for the most important workshop of all: a production. With the writers in residence, our whole team focuses on supporting their vision and bringing it to our audience. Recent examples include Wolf Play, Magellanica, The Thanksgiving Play, The Talented Ones, and Cuba Líbre.
In addition to premiering new plays, ART recognizes that second productions are vital to a play’s ongoing life. We offer playwrights an opportunity to continue working on their play after its premiere, encouraging them to use the second production to make their play the best it can be. Teenage Dick in our 18/19 season, and La Ruta in 19/20 show the benefit of writers’ continued attention after the premiere.
At the Apex Productions
A touchingly hilarious take on Shakespeare’s power hungry Richard III, Teenage Dick reimagines Richard as a bullied teenager with cerebral palsy, who will do anything he can to become his high school’s Senior class president.
Part historical adventure, part love story and mystical foray into the unknown, Magellanica is a demanding, five-part epic that tackles issues of political, social and scientific urgency on a global scale.
A group of mismatched teachers and actors have been charged by the school district to devise an ethnically sensitive play to somehow celebrate both Thanksgiving and Native American Heritage Month.
