Queer Plays

with Adin Walker

What constitutes a “queer play”? How has theater shaped our understanding of queerness, and vice versa? As queerness takes on new meanings over time, how has theater participated in those constantly expanding conversations? How do queer audiences activate a “queer gaze” when encountering plays?

These questions form the backbone of this weekly seminar-style exploration of plays that center LGBTQ+ stories and participate in larger conversations around queer representation. We’ll examine works from the early 20th century to plays currently in development. Some of the playwrights whose work we’ll read and discuss include Yilong Liu, L M Feldman, Philip Dawkins, Miranda Rose Hall, Donja Love, Moises Kaufman, Tennessee Williams, Matthew Lopez, Paula Vogel, Shelagh Delaney, Brendan Behan, Edwin Rosales, Dipika Guha, Roger Q Mason, Tony Kushner, and more!
