In the Room

ART is partnering with Portland’s Fertile Ground Festival to extend development opportunities to exciting new works after they’ve been in the Festival. 

Offering next-level support to local playwrights, In the Room builds on the experience of staged readings and workshop performances, providing:

• A four-day workshop designed with the playwright to address their goals for development
• Direction and dramaturgy led by ART’s artistic staff
• Two pre-workshop conversations between playwright and artistic staff to set goals
• A public sharing of the play at the workshop’s culmination is optional, at the playwright’s discretion
• Playwrights receive a participation fee; actors and stage manager work under an Equity contract

 Two plays from the 2026 Fertile Ground Festival have been selected for development in the 26/27 season.
