Playwright
Andrea Stolowitz is an internationally produced playwright and librettist. She is a three-time winner of the Oregon Book Award for Drama, a recipient of the Miller Foundation’s $25,000 Sparks Award for mid-career artists, and a recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts/NYC Mayor’s Office Award for Women in Theatre, Film, and Television. Her work has been developed and presented nationally and internationally at theaters including The Old Globe, Long Wharf Theatre, Cherry Lane Theatre, New York Stage and Film, Fishamble: The New Play Company, and Corcadorca Theatre Company.
A dual U.S./German citizen, Stolowitz divides her time between New York, Portland, Berlin, and Ireland. Her work often combines documentary inquiry, theatrical experimentation, and personal narrative to explore questions of history, identity, memory, and belonging. Her recent work includes “Numbered Be Our Days”, an Irish Arts Council Project Award-winning play about the Jewish community of Cork, Ireland, was presented at Cork Midsummer Festival in 2025. “The Berlin Diaries” recently completed an NNPN Rolling World Premiere with productions across the United States and Berlin and is published by Concord Theatricals.
Stolowitz’s play “Recent Unsettling Events”, commissioned by Artists Repertory Theatre, won the 2025 Kernodle New Play Award and the American Blues Theater Blue Ink Award and was a finalist for the Eugene O’Neill National Playwrights Conference. Other plays include “Knowing Cairo”, recipient of San Diego’s Billie Award for Best New Play and an LA Times Critics’ Pick; “Antarktikos”, winner of the Oregon Book Award and a Susan Smith Blackburn Prize nominee; and “Ithaka”, winner of the Oregon Book Award for Drama. Stolowitz is a New Dramatists alumna and a Core Writer alumna of the Playwrights’ Center. She has taught dramatic writing at Duke University, UC San Diego, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Willamette University, and the University of Galway. She holds an MFA in Playwriting from UC San Diego.
