Taiko (Japanese drumming) is an energetic fusion of sound, movement and spirit, and has been a loud and proud voice to express stories of identity and heritage. Through a rhythmic journey, we will share stories through body, rhythm, and the powerful beats of taiko engaging in questions of identity and belonging – how we identify ourselves and how we perceive others. How have I been othered? How have I othered myself? How have I othered others?

This workshop was developed in partnership with Unit Souzou’s new performance project, Constant State of Otherness, which will be performed in May 2022 in Portland. This project investigates whose narratives are told, unpacking, unraveling, and acknowledging our stories to reveal the complexities and nuances of identity.

This workshop is designed with beginners in mind, no previous taiko experience necessary, but students must be 16 years of age and older. Participants can expect to be physical and make noise, and to share stories and listen. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring water.

Ever wished you could be a fly on the wall for some of the closed-room conversations among artists? This series gives our audience members and session participants the chance to do just that. A group of ART affiliated artists gather to discuss a variety of topics about which they are passionate, sharing some of their own philosophies and experiences navigating those issues in professional spaces. This pre-recorded chat then serves as the inspiration for a larger group conversation on that topic among workshop session participants. With the goal of engaging our audiences and community members in accessible and congenial dialogues that address real and often challenging issues around equity in creative arts spaces, this workshop invites us all to ask how listening, self-reflection, and honest conversation might contribute to meaningful change. Session facilitators and conversation topics vary.

In this 6-week, 3-session intensive, you will put heads together with instructor, Bern Tan, to:

  • Build your musical theatre book, picking material that speaks to you and to casting directors for the upcoming season
  • Create cuts specific for you and that leverage your strengths
  • Adjust your singing and acting choices to make each cut stronger
  • Gather feedback and technical advice on self-taping during these pandemic times

It’s 2022, and we’re still needing to submit initial self-tapes of our singing for Musical Theatre auditions across the country. Actors will receive one-on-one coaching at each session, as well as review strategies with Bern to build a book that will serve them well for this season’s auditions. Special attention will also be given to the technical elements of self-taping your initial submissions.

Small class – space is limited, so that each attendee can be individually coached at each session. Attendees will sing each week on Zoom, alongside an accompaniment track of their choice.  More details on maximizing your Zoom connection for such coaching and on finding good tracks will be provided after registration.

Bern is a New York City-based (AEA) actor and (NATS) voice teacher whose students are on Broadway, National Tours, and in film/TV. For full credentials, see www.berntan.net

March 3 through April 2 (Three classes) on Saturday, from 10am-12pm PST each week.
